Is Snake Road open year-round?

Snake Road is open to vehicle traffic during much of the year, but it closes seasonally during the spring and fall migrations to protect reptiles and amphibians. Always check official sources before traveling for current closures and regulations.

When is the best time to visit?

There's no single "best" time. Spring and fall migrations generally offer the greatest variety of species, but weather conditions have a tremendous impact on wildlife activity. Some days produce dozens of sightings, while others are much quieter.

Will I definitely see snakes?

No. (But during the 'migration' seasons... almost certainly!)

Snake Road is one of the best places in North America to observe reptiles, but wildlife is never guaranteed. Every visit is different, and patience is part of the experience.

Are the snakes dangerous?

Most Snake Road snakes are harmless.

However, venomous species—including cottonmouths, copperheads, and timber rattlesnakes—are present. Observe all wildlife from a respectful distance and never attempt to handle or disturb any snake.

Can I photograph the snakes?

Absolutely.

Snake Road is a world-class wildlife photography destination. Please photograph responsibly, avoid stressing wildlife, and give every animal plenty of space.

Can I touch or move a snake?

No.

The best experience for everyone is to leave every animal exactly where you found it. Observing without disturbing wildlife helps protect both the animals and future visitors' experiences. It is ILLEGAL to handle snakes or other wildlife on Snake Road.
